Sexually Transmitted Disease

Florida Department of Health in Broward County

Florida Department of Health in Broward offers STD services
The Florida Department of Health in Broward County provides Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) surveillance, partner services as well as diagnosis and treatment. STDs include more than 25 infectious organisms that are spread through sexual activity. These infections are most easily spread by vaginal or anal intercourse, and sometimes by oral sex. Some STDs can also be spread through blood, particularly among intravenous (IV) drug users who may be sharing drug equipment (needles, syringes, or "works"). In addition, pregnant women with STDs may pass their infection to infants in the uterus, during birth, or through breast-feeding. Although many people with STDs have no symptoms, STDs can cause a variety of clinical syndromes.

Surveillance

DOH-Broward collects data from healthcare providers and laboratories on an ongoing and systematic basis regarding all positive test results for STDs in Broward County. This data is utilized to assure treatment and provide partner services and target prevention activities.

Partner Services

Highly trained Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS), supervisors and managers, provide confidential counseling, testing and treatment for persons either diagnosed with or exposed to an STD. Clients who are diagnosed with an STD are also offered partner referral services that allow for the notification, screening and treatment of their sex or needle sharing partners; partner referral services, conducted by professional DIS, results in greater confidentiality for clients and their partners, as well as providing more effective notification and treatment methodologies. This service is provided to clients on a voluntary basis and is strictly confidential.
